Engineered surfaces have largely replaced natural stone on worktops, and the choice now is usually between quartz and sintered stone. They look similar in a showroom and behave differently in a kitchen, so it is worth understanding what you are paying for before deciding.
What each one is
Quartz surfacing is made from crushed natural quartz, typically around 90 percent, bound with a polymer resin and pigment, then formed into slabs under pressure. The resin is what holds it together.
Sintered stone is made from natural mineral powders pressed under very high pressure and fired at high temperature until the particles fuse. There is no resin. The result is closer to a fired ceramic than to a composite.

Heat
Sintered stone wins clearly. Because there is no resin, it handles a hot pan straight from the hob without marking.
Quartz contains resin, which can scorch or discolour under direct heat. Manufacturers advise using a trivet, and that advice is real rather than cautious. This is the most common cause of damage to a quartz worktop.
Ultraviolet light and outdoor use
Sintered stone wins. It is stable in sunlight and suits outdoor kitchens, terraces and window sills in bright rooms.
Quartz can discolour with prolonged direct sun, so most makers do not recommend it outdoors. In a very bright kitchen it is worth thinking about where the sun falls in summer.
Stains and cleaning
Both perform very well and neither needs sealing, which is their main advantage over natural stone.
Sintered stone has a slight edge with strong chemicals and aggressive cleaning, since there is no resin to attack. In practice, for normal kitchen use, both wipe clean easily and resist wine, oil and coffee.
Scratching and chipping
Sintered stone is harder and resists scratching better. Being harder also makes it more brittle, so it can chip at an exposed edge if something heavy strikes it directly.
Quartz is slightly softer and a little more forgiving of impact. Both should be cut on a board rather than directly.
Appearance
This is close, and it depends what you want.
Quartz offers a wide range of consistent patterns with genuine depth, since the quartz particles sit throughout the slab. Marble effect quartz with veining running through the body looks convincing on a thick edge.
Sintered stone is surface printed with the pattern applied before firing, and the technology is now excellent. Some ranges carry the pattern through the body, which matters on an exposed edge, so ask specifically if you plan a thick or mitred edge.
Sintered stone also comes in very large slabs and in thin formats, which allows a worktop, a splashback and even cabinet fronts in one continuous material.
Fabrication
Quartz is easier to cut, shape and polish, and more fabricators are comfortable with it. Sintered stone is harder and more brittle, needing specific tooling and experience, particularly for cut outs around a sink or a hob where a poorly made corner can crack.
If you choose sintered stone, choose a fabricator who works with it regularly. This matters more than the brand of the slab.
Cost
Quartz is generally less expensive as a material and to fabricate. Sintered stone costs more on both counts, and the gap has narrowed as more producers have entered the market.
Is the upgrade worth it?
It depends entirely on the situation, and the honest answer is that quartz is the right choice for many kitchens.
Sintered stone is worth the extra where heat is a real factor, so a serious cooking kitchen or a commercial setting. Where the surface is outdoors or in strong direct sun. Where you want very large continuous slabs with minimal joints. And where the surface will face heavy cleaning, as in hospitality.
Quartz remains excellent value where the kitchen is normal domestic use, where a trivet is not a hardship, where the surface is away from strong sun, and where you want a specific pattern from the wide range available.
What to ask before ordering
Slab thickness, commonly 12mm or 20mm, since that affects the edge detail. Whether the pattern runs through the body or is surface printed. The finish, whether polished, matt or textured. The slab size, which decides how many joints your layout needs. And who is fabricating it, along with their experience with the specific material.
