Sintered stone is one of the most exciting building material developments of recent years, and China has rapidly become the dominant global producer of this product. Made by subjecting a mixture of natural minerals to extreme heat and pressure, sintered stone produces a fully vitrified panel that is harder than granite, resistant to UV fading, impervious to staining, and available in enormous format sizes that natural stone simply cannot match. The factories producing sintered stone in China, particularly in the Foshan and Guangdong ceramic production zone, are making this material accessible to projects at a price point that was unimaginable just a few years ago.
What Sintered Stone Is and Why It Matters
Sintered stone is manufactured by mixing feldspar, quartz, silica, natural mineral oxides, and clay-based materials, then pressing the mixture in a hydraulic press at pressures exceeding 15,000 tonnes and firing at temperatures above 1,200 degrees Celsius. The result is a panel with zero porosity, hardness exceeding 7 on the Mohs scale, and a scratch, heat, and chemical resistance that no other surface material can match. Unlike quartz engineered stone, sintered stone contains no resin binders and is therefore suitable for outdoor use, direct contact with hot cookware, and prolonged UV exposure without any risk of surface degradation.
Sizes, Thicknesses, and Applications
The most common slab sizes from Chinese factories are 1600x3200mm and 1200x2400mm. Thicknesses available are typically 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, and 20mm. The 6mm and 9mm thicknesses are used for wall cladding, furniture panels, and countertop overlay applications. The 12mm thickness is the standard for countertops and worksurfaces. The 20mm thickness is used for flooring in high-traffic areas and for feature staircase treads. The large format sizes mean that kitchen countertops and bathroom vanity tops can be cut from a single slab with no visible joins, which is one of the most commercially compelling aspects of this material.
Surface Finishes Available
Polished, matte, silk, and lappato surface finishes are all available from Chinese sintered stone manufacturers. Polished finishes suit formal interior applications. Matte finishes are practical for flooring. Silk finish offers a compromise between the two. Structured or textured surfaces replicate stone, timber, or fabric textures and add depth to large format wall cladding applications.
