A task chair is a safety product, not just furniture
Office chairs carry a person all day and the component that fails is almost always the gas lift cylinder. Cylinders are manufactured to defined classes, and the class determines the tested load and cycle life. A chair sold into a commercial environment should carry a cylinder from a recognised maker with the class marked on it, and the certificate should reference the cylinder actually fitted.
Ask three questions on every chair quotation. Which cylinder class and which brand. Which mechanism, meaning a simple tilt, a synchro tilt where back and seat move at a set ratio, or a full multi function mechanism. - Duty cycle. How many minutes of continuous operation the motor is rated for. Low duty cycle motors overheat in a busy office.
- Column stages. Three stage columns give a wider height range and more stability at the top of travel than two stage.
- Anti collision. The desk should stop when it meets an obstruction. Test this at inspection, do not assume it works because the spec sheet says so.
- Wobble at full height. The genuine differentiator. Extend the desk fully and push it. Cheap frames sway noticeably.
Worktops, edges and cable management
Most desk tops are melamine faced board. The edge is what fails, so ask for thick banding rather than the thinnest available. For a contract order, ask about impact resistance at corners, because desks get knocked by chairs and trolleys constantly.
Cable management is the detail that separates a desk that looks professional in situ from one that does not. Grommets in the right places, a cable tray under the top, and a route down the leg for power. It costs very little to specify and it is nearly impossible to retrofit neatly.

Buying for an office fit out rather than for stock
Project orders behave differently from stock orders. You are matching one specification across dozens or hundreds of identical units, which means batch consistency matters more than anything else. Order the whole quantity in a single production run, take a full sample of every component before bulk starts, and keep a small percentage of spares of every part that can fail, particularly gas cylinders, castors and mechanism levers.
