Frame quality is the most important structural factor to assess. Hardwood frames, typically eucalyptus or rubberwood, are durable and resistant to warping. Cushion fill is another area where there is a wide range of quality. High-resilience foam (HR foam) in densities above 30kg per cubic meter holds its shape well over time. Suspension, the part almost nobody asks about
Frame and foam get discussed in every quotation. Suspension rarely does, and it is where cost quietly disappears, because once the sofa is upholstered you cannot see it.
- Elastic webbing. The cheapest option. Acceptable for light residential use, and the first thing to sag. Widely used on budget models sold as “sofas from China” at very low FOB prices.
- Sinuous or serpentine springs. The working standard for anything sold commercially. Gauge matters: heavier gauge wire, closer spacing and more clips per seat all cost more and all last longer.
- Pocket coil seat units. The best of the three for seat feel and recovery, common in premium and hospitality specifications, and a meaningful step up in price.
Put the suspension type in the specification in writing, along with the foam density. These two lines protect you more than any other part of a sofa contract.
Fire regulations are decided by your destination, not the factory
Upholstery is one of the few furniture categories where the destination market imposes real compliance requirements on the filling and the cover fabric, not just on labelling. Buyers importing into the United Kingdom deal with the strictest regime in Europe, where covers and fillings are tested and a permanent label is expected on the finished piece. Buyers shipping to the United States generally work to the Californian standard that the industry has adopted nationally. Elsewhere in Europe the picture varies by country rather than following one harmonised rule.
The practical point is the same everywhere: tell the factory your destination before production starts, not after. Compliant foam and treated fabric have to go into the sofa while it is being built. Discovering the requirement after the container is packed means remaking the goods, and we have seen buyers lose an entire production run that way. Approximate FOB ranges. The spread between budget and premium in the same silhouette is mostly frame timber, foam density, suspension and cover grade. Two sofas that photograph identically can sit at opposite ends of this table.
How many sofas fit in a container
Upholstery is bulky and light, so you run out of cubic metres long before you run out of weight allowance. A packed three seat sofa occupies roughly 1.2 to 1.6 cubic metres depending on arm style and whether the legs detach. A 40 foot high cube gives you around 68 usable cubic metres, which works out at roughly 45 to 55 three seaters, or fewer if the design has fixed wide arms.
Two things materially improve that number. Detachable legs and arms, which most Foshan factories can build in without changing the look, and knock down back frames on modular designs. If you are filling a container for a project, ask for the packed dimensions before you finalise the model mix rather than after.
Where sofa orders go wrong
- Foam substitution after sample approval. The approved sample has the density you specified and the production run does not. Weigh a cushion at inspection, it is the fastest check there is.
- Leather grade swapped on non-contact surfaces. Full or top grain on the seat and back, split leather with a coating on the sides and rear. Legitimate if disclosed and agreed, a problem when it is not.
- Frame timber swapped from kiln dried hardwood to softer or wetter stock, which shows up months later as creaking and racking.
- Dye lot variation across a large fabric order, so pieces delivered to the same room do not match. Insist on one dye lot per order or per room set.
- Skipped pre-shipment inspection. A sit test, a seam check and a frame rack test on a sample of the run catches nearly all of the above while the goods are still the factory’s problem.
