The question we get more than any other is simple: how much cheaper is it really? People have usually seen a sofa they like at home, they know what the shop wants for it, and they want to know whether ordering the same kind of thing from a factory in China is worth the effort.
This article gives you honest ranges rather than a sales pitch. The numbers come from the kind of quotations Foshan factories give us day to day, set against the shelf prices buyers tell us they see in Europe, the UK, the United States and Australia.

Why the same item has such a wide range
When a factory quotes you the low end and another quotes you triple, they are usually not quoting the same product. These are the things that actually move the number:
- Frame material. A sofa built on solid hardwood costs more than one built on plywood, which costs more than one built on particle board with a few timber rails.
- Foam density. This is the single biggest hidden difference in upholstery. Low density foam feels fine in a showroom and flattens within a year. Ask for the density figure in kilograms per cubic metre and put it in the contract.
- Fabric or leather grade. Genuine full grain leather, split leather and bonded leather can all be described loosely as leather by a careless supplier. The price gap between them is enormous.
- Hardware. Drawer runners and hinges from a recognised brand add real cost and remove most of the complaints you would otherwise get after delivery.
- Order quantity. Below one container, most factories quote defensively because the run is inefficient for them.
- Season. Quotes tighten in the weeks before Chinese New Year when capacity is scarce, and soften afterwards.
A worked example, furnishing a three bedroom apartment
This is illustrative, using mid range specifications rather than the cheapest or the most expensive option in each row above.
| Item | Quantity | Approx. factory total |
|---|---|---|
| Three seat fabric sofa | 1 | USD 380 |
| Coffee table | 1 | USD 90 |
| TV unit | 1 | USD 120 |
| Dining table with six chairs | 1 set | USD 420 |
| Bed frames | 3 | USD 900 |
| Wardrobes | 3 | USD 1,200 |
| Nightstands | 6 | USD 270 |
| Desk and office chair | 1 set | USD 200 |
| Factory subtotal | USD 3,580 |
That volume fits comfortably inside one 20 foot container, which holds roughly 28 to 33 cubic metres. The same list bought new from mid market retailers abroad would commonly land somewhere between USD 12,000 and USD 18,000, depending on the country and the brands chosen.
The factory subtotal is not what you pay in the end. Freight, insurance, duty, local tax, unloading and delivery all sit on top, and those are covered in detail in our guide to landed cost. Even after all of it, an order at this scale usually finishes well below local retail. The gap narrows sharply if you try to do the same thing with three items instead of thirty.
When the numbers stop working
Buying furniture from China is a volume game. Shipping a half empty container costs almost the same as shipping a full one, and customs clearance costs the same either way. If you want two armchairs and a bed, the honest answer is usually to buy them at home. We say this to people every week, and we would rather say it early than take an order that leaves someone disappointed.
The point at which it starts to make sense is normally when you can fill at least a 20 foot container, whether that is one apartment, a small shop fit out, or several rooms of a guest house. Below that, look at whether you can combine your order with someone else’s, which is something we arrange regularly through consolidation at our warehouse.
Getting a real number
Ranges are useful for deciding whether to look further. They are not useful for budgeting. Once you know roughly what you want, send us the list with quantities and any reference photographs, and we will come back with quotations from factories that actually make that type of product, along with the freight estimate for your destination and our fee stated in writing before anything starts.
The part you cannot judge from a spreadsheet
Prices tell you whether a project is worth exploring. They do not tell you whether a factory can actually build what you drew, whether the finish matches the sample under daylight, or whether the person quoting you owns a factory at all rather than a desk and a phone.
This is the reason Foshan matters so much in furniture. The factories, the showrooms, the material suppliers and the finishing workshops sit close together, so a buyer who comes in person can see genuinely different suppliers in one day rather than spending a week in traffic. Lecong alone runs to millions of square metres of furniture showroom space, and the ceramics, lighting and sanitary ware bases are a short drive from it. Very few places in the world let you compare this many real manufacturers this quickly.
Booking a sourcing trip to Foshan
If you are seriously considering an order, come and walk the floor. We will build the itinerary around your product list, drive you between factories, translate the technical conversation, and tell you privately afterwards which suppliers we would actually use and which we would avoid.
One practical note, and we would rather be blunt than lose your time. We take a limited number of buyers each week, because each visit needs a person from our team with you for the whole day rather than a driver and a map. Certain windows fill up first: the two Canton Fair periods in April and October, and the weeks running up to Chinese New Year when factory capacity tightens and everyone wants to place orders before the shutdown. If your travel dates fall anywhere near those, confirm them with us early rather than late. Late requests in peak season are the ones we most often have to turn down.
Tell us when you are thinking of coming and what you want to look at, and we will confirm whether we have the days free before you book flights.
