This synthetic rattan is UV-resistant, weatherproof, and holds its color and shape through years of outdoor use in most climates. Aluminum outdoor furniture has grown rapidly in popularity because it is lightweight, rust-proof, and can be produced in almost any style from sleek contemporary loungers to chunky frame dining sets. Teak outdoor furniture from China uses plantation teak grown in Indonesia and processed in factories across Guangdong, producing the same durable and beautiful material you would find in premium European outdoor furniture at considerably lower cost.
What to Check for Quality
Frame gauge matters significantly in outdoor furniture. Thicker-walled aluminum tube is noticeably more rigid and durable than the thin-wall sections used to cut costs in budget products. Ask for the wall thickness specification and check it against the sample. For rattan furniture, the weave density and the quality of the frame underneath are the most important factors. UV resistance of the rattan material should be confirmed with a UV test certification. For teak, the grade of the wood matters. Grade A teak has tight grain, golden color, and minimal knots. Grade B and C have more variation and are lower cost but visually less consistent.

Not all rattan is the same material
Almost nothing sold as outdoor rattan is rattan. It is synthetic wicker, and the polymer it is made from decides whether the furniture still looks acceptable after three summers.
- PE wicker, ideally HDPE. The one you want. UV stabilised through the material rather than coated on the surface, so it fades slowly and evenly. It stays flexible in cold weather instead of going brittle.
- PVC wicker. Cheaper, stiffer, and prone to cracking and colour loss under strong sun. Perfectly acceptable for a covered terrace in a mild climate, a poor choice for a Mediterranean or Gulf rooftop.
Ask which polymer, ask whether UV stabiliser is compounded into the material or applied to the surface, and ask for the UV test hours. A factory selling into Australia or the Middle East will have these figures. If the answer is vague, assume the cheaper material.
The frame underneath matters more than the weave
Powder coated aluminium is the sensible default for outdoor furniture: it does not rust, it is light enough to move, and it is strong enough for seating. What varies is the wall thickness of the tube and the quality of the coating pretreatment. A thin tube flexes and eventually the weave loosens around it.
Steel frames cost less and rust from the inside out wherever the coating is broken, which happens the first time a chair is dragged across a stone terrace. If you are buying steel, understand you are buying a shorter life. Stainless fittings should be specified for anything within reach of salt air, because ordinary fixings will bleed rust stains down a white frame within a season.
Teak is the traditional premium answer. Grade and origin matter enormously, and so does whether the joinery is properly mortised. Teak will silver naturally unless it is oiled, which is a maintenance conversation to have with your customer rather than a defect.
Cushions are where outdoor furniture actually fails
The frame usually outlives the cushions by years. Three specifications decide how long they last.
- Fabric. Solution dyed acrylic holds colour dramatically better than printed or piece dyed polyester, because the colour is in the fibre rather than on it. It costs noticeably more and it is the single biggest quality difference in an outdoor set.
- Foam. Outdoor foam must be reticulated or quick dry so that water passes straight through. Standard upholstery foam in an outdoor cushion holds water, stays damp and grows mould.
- Drainage and covers. Cushion covers need mesh drainage panels on the underside and, ideally, removable zipped covers so the customer can wash them.

Buy it in the right season
Outdoor furniture is the most seasonal category in this industry. Factories are overwhelmed from roughly late autumn through winter as European and North American buyers place for the following summer, and lead times stretch accordingly. Order in that window and you will queue behind everyone else.
Placing earlier, in the quieter part of the year, generally buys you better pricing, better factory attention and a realistic lead time. Work backwards from when you need stock on the shelf, add production, add sea freight, add customs, and add a buffer for the fact that everyone else is shipping at the same time.
What goes wrong
- PVC supplied as PE. Ask for the material certificate and check a sample by flexing it in the cold.
- Cushion fabric substituted from acrylic to polyester after sample approval. The colour looks identical on day one and completely different after a season.
- Standard foam in outdoor cushions, which arrives fine and goes mouldy in the first rain.
- Rust bleed from non stainless fixings on coastal installations.
- Frames that arrive scratched because powder coated aluminium was stacked without interleaving. Insist on protective wrap between pieces.
