People ask us some version of this question every week. They have heard Foshan is a good place to buy from, they are not entirely sure what that covers, and they want to know before they book a flight whether the things on their list are actually here.
So here is the honest inventory. Every category of furniture and building material you can source in Foshan, roughly where in the city each one lives, and what separates a cheap version from a good one. There is also a section near the end on what Foshan is not the right place for, because sending you somewhere else is more useful than pretending we can get everything.
The short version: if it goes into a building, or into a room inside a building, there is a very good chance it is made within an hour of here. Foshan covers the finished interior and the building materials behind it in the same city, which is rarer than it sounds.
Why so much is in one place
Chinese manufacturing organises itself into clusters. A town starts making one thing, suppliers of raw material move nearby, then component makers, then the people who fix the machines, then the people who ship it. Thirty years later there are hundreds of factories doing variations of the same product within a few streets of each other.
Foshan has several of these clusters stacked next to each other, which is unusual anywhere in China. Furniture in one district, ceramics in another, aluminium in a third, and all of them close enough that you can visit factories from two different industries in one day. That is the practical reason buyers come here rather than chasing suppliers across three provinces.
Furniture
This is the headline act. Lecong, in Shunde district, is a furniture trading area of a scale that genuinely does not translate into words. Buildings full of showrooms, one after another, for kilometres.
What you can get:
- Living room. Fabric and leather sofas, sectionals, recliners, coffee tables, TV units, accent chairs, sideboards.
- Bedroom. Bed frames in panel and upholstered styles, storage and ottoman beds, wardrobes, closet systems, nightstands, dressers, dressing tables.
- Dining. Tables in solid timber, veneer, glass, marble and sintered stone, plus every chair style you can picture.
- Office. Desks, height adjustable frames, task and executive chairs, workstations, pedestals, meeting tables, reception counters.
- Hospitality. Complete hotel room packages, lobby seating, reception desks, banquette seating, restaurant chairs and tables, bar stools.
- Outdoor. Synthetic rattan, powder coated aluminium, teak, sun loungers, parasols, shade structures, planters.
Quality spans everything from throwaway to genuinely excellent. On upholstery, the things that separate them are frame timber, foam density, suspension type and cover grade, none of which show in a photograph. On casegoods it is board type, edge banding and the brand of the hinges and runners.
Ceramic and porcelain tiles
Foshan is China’s ceramics heartland and has been for centuries. The modern industry sits mainly around Chancheng and Nanzhuang, and the historic kilns that started it all are in Shiwan.
The range covers wall tile, floor tile, porcelain in every format from small mosaics to large format panels, wood look planks, stone and marble look, concrete effect, full body porcelain for commercial floors, anti slip for wet areas, pool tile, and 20mm pavers for terraces laid dry without adhesive.
What actually matters when you buy: water absorption, abrasion rating, whether the tile is rectified, slip rating, and how many unique printed faces are in the set. That last one decides whether a wood look floor reads as timber or as obvious repetition.
Sanitary ware and bathrooms
A complete bathroom can be sourced here without leaving the district. Toilets in close coupled, wall hung, one piece and rimless designs. Basins in every mounting style. Bathtubs in acrylic, solid surface and cast iron, built in and freestanding. Shower trays and glass enclosures. Bathroom vanities and mirror cabinets. Taps and mixers. Shower systems including thermostatic valves. Towel rails, accessories and hardware sets.
Two warnings that catch people out. Toilet rough in dimensions and trap type differ by market, so a pan made to one standard will not sit on a floor plumbed to another. And taps on drinking water lines face lead content rules in most developed markets, so low lead brass has to be specified deliberately.
Lighting
Foshan has a substantial lighting industry covering both the technical and the decorative ends.
On the technical side: LED panels, downlights, linear battens, track lighting, high bay fittings for industrial spaces, floodlights, strip lighting and drivers. On the decorative side: chandeliers, pendants, wall sconces, table and floor lamps, and large bespoke feature pieces for hotel lobbies.
The quality gap in lighting is wider than in almost any other category, and it hides in figures rather than looks. Lumens per watt, colour rendering, how tightly the colour temperature is binned across a batch, driver brand, heat sink mass and whether the certification actually covers the model you are buying.
Aluminium, doors and windows
Nanhai district, and the Dali area in particular, is one of the country’s major aluminium processing centres.
You can buy raw extruded profile, architectural systems, casement and sliding windows, bifold and sliding doors, curtain wall systems for commercial facades, spider and point fixed glazing, shopfronts, louvres, and decorative profiles for interiors.
The single biggest specification question is whether a profile is thermally broken. An untreated aluminium frame conducts cold straight through the wall and produces condensation indoors, and in any market with building energy rules it will not pass. The glazing unit matters as much as the frame: low emissivity coating, argon fill, warm edge spacer, toughened or laminated where regulations require it.
Remember that windows and doors are made to your measured openings. There is no stock and no returns, so a proper site survey has to happen before production.
Stone and engineered surfaces
Worktops, islands, cladding and feature walls, in several different materials that behave very differently.
- Engineered quartz. Consistent, non porous, widely available, and sensitive to direct heat because of the resin that binds it.
- Sintered stone. No resin at all, so it handles heat and UV, which makes it the material for outdoor kitchens. Harder to fabricate and less forgiving at cut outs.
- Natural marble and granite. Available, beautiful, heavy, and porous in the case of marble.
- Solid surface. Joins invisibly, can be repaired in place, and is the usual choice for reception counters and integrated basins.
Flooring
Beyond tile, Foshan and the surrounding area supply engineered wood flooring, solid timber, laminate, and the whole vinyl family: flexible LVT, rigid SPC and foamed WPC.
For wood, the number that matters is the wear layer thickness, because it decides how many times a floor can be refinished. For vinyl, it is the wear layer again, plus choosing the right core, since SPC handles temperature swings far better than the alternatives in a sunlit room. Both categories face emission and material regulations at the border in most developed markets.
Kitchens
Complete kitchen cabinetry is made here, priced by the linear metre or by the set rather than per cabinet. Door finishes run from melamine through PET and acrylic to baked lacquer, veneer and solid timber. Carcasses come in standard board, moisture resistant board, MDF and plywood.
Commercial kitchen equipment is a separate industry in the same city: stainless steel benches, sinks, shelving, extraction canopies, prep tables and storage for restaurants and hotels.
The catch with cabinetry is that Chinese domestic cabinet dimensions do not always match European or North American norms, so every height and depth has to be checked against your own appliances and worktops before production.
Walls, ceilings and decorative panels
MDF and PVC wall panels, 3D decorative panels, timber cladding and wall paneling, fibre cement and aluminium exterior cladding, stone panels, acoustic panels for offices and restaurants, suspended ceiling systems, ceiling tiles and grid, and the aluminium and steel framing that carries all of it.
This category has grown enormously and it is one where a visit pays for itself, because photographs flatten texture and these products are all about texture.
Glass and mirrors
Shower enclosures in frameless, semi frameless and framed designs. Tempered and laminated glass. Balustrade glass. Bathroom and vanity mirrors including LED and demister versions. Decorative and oversized wall mirrors. Glass partitions for offices.
Everything here is fragile and heavy, so packing quality matters more than in any other category. Poor crating turns a good order into an insurance claim.
Metalwork
Stainless steel handrails and balustrades for commercial and residential use, steel frame doors including security and fire rated types, metal storage cabinets, lockers, filing cabinets, industrial shelving, and architectural metalwork and screens.
Soft furnishings and textiles for interiors
Curtains and blinds with their tracks and hardware, roller and roman blinds, cushions, mattresses, and upholstery fabric. This sits alongside the furniture industry for obvious reasons, and it is convenient if you are furnishing rooms rather than buying single items.
Hardware and the small things
Hinges, drawer runners, handles and knobs, door locks and furniture, curtain tracks, castors, gas struts, cabinet lighting, connectors and fixings. Unglamorous and worth attention, because hardware is where a piece of furniture feels expensive or cheap every single day.
What Foshan is not the right place for
This part matters. Foshan is excellent at a defined set of things and average or worse at others, and the honest answer saves you a wasted trip.
Electronics and consumer technology. That is Shenzhen and Dongguan. You can buy some here, but you will be buying from a trader rather than a factory, and you would be better served going where the industry actually is.
Clothing and footwear. Guangdong has major garment clusters, but they are not in Foshan. If apparel is your business, this is not your city.
Small general merchandise. Stationery, toys, kitchen gadgets, seasonal goods, party supplies and the enormous long tail of cheap consumer items. That is Yiwu, several provinces north, and it is a completely different sourcing model built around tiny minimum quantities.
Machinery and heavy industrial equipment. Some exists here, but the specialist centres are elsewhere.
Anything you want fifty units of. This is a container city. Factories here are set up for volume, and very small orders either get refused or get quoted defensively.

The advantage of buying several categories at once
Here is the thing that makes Foshan genuinely efficient rather than merely large.
A hotel developer needs furniture, tiles, sanitary ware, lighting, doors, flooring and mirrors, which is to say furniture and building materials on one purchase order. A property developer needs the same list several hundred times over. A retailer might need furniture and lighting and decorative accessories. In most of the world those come from different countries. Here they come from different districts of the same city.
That matters for cost as much as convenience. Dense products such as tile and sanitary ware hit a container’s weight limit long before they fill the space. Bulky light products such as furniture and bathtubs fill the space and barely touch the weight allowance. Load them together and you use the container properly, which lowers the cost of everything in it.
Doing that means collecting from several factories, checking everything in one place, repacking whatever arrived in weak cartons, and loading one container in a sensible order. That consolidation work is most of what we actually do day to day, and it is where the savings on a mixed order come from.
How to use this list
If you are planning a trip, group your visits by district rather than by wish list. Furniture in Shunde, aluminium and windows in Nanhai, ceramics and sanitary ware around Chancheng and Nanzhuang. Trying to see a furniture factory and an aluminium plant and a tile factory in one morning is how people lose a day to traffic.
