Laminate Flooring from China: What to Look For and How to Order in Bulk

Laminate flooring from China supplies a large share of the global market and is one of the most straightforward building material categories to source from Chinese factories. The product technology is mature, the production equipment is standardized, and the pricing from Chinese manufacturers is consistently well below what comparable products sell for through distribution channels in most Western markets. For flooring importers, builders, and property developers sourcing floor finishes in volume, China is the obvious starting point for laminate flooring procurement.

How Laminate Flooring Is Made

Laminate flooring is a multi-layer product. The base layer is a moisture-resistant backing board. Above that is the core, typically high-density fiberboard. The decorative layer is a photographic print film that shows the wood, stone, or other surface design. The top layer is a clear aluminum oxide wear layer that protects the surface from scratching and abrasion. The layers are bonded together under high pressure and heat in a process called direct pressure lamination or high pressure lamination. The quality of each layer, and particularly the HDF core density and the wear layer thickness, determines the product’s performance and lifespan.

AC Rating and What It Means

Laminate flooring is tested and rated on the Abrasion Criteria scale from AC1 to AC6. AC3 is the minimum for light commercial use and is suitable for most residential applications. AC4 is appropriate for general commercial use including offices, cafes, and retail. AC5 is used in heavy commercial applications including department stores and public buildings. AC6 is specified for extreme commercial use. Always confirm the AC rating of any laminate you are buying from China and ask for test certification from an accredited laboratory. Some factories overstate their AC rating, so independent verification is worthwhile for large orders.

Thickness and Underlay

Laminate flooring thickness ranges from 7mm up to 12mm. Thicker laminate provides better sound absorption, a more solid feel underfoot, and slightly better thermal insulation. 8mm is the minimum acceptable for most residential applications. 10mm and 12mm are preferred for commercial use and for installations over concrete subfloors without underlay. Underlay, which provides cushioning and moisture protection, is sometimes integrated into the back of the laminate panel and sometimes supplied separately. Confirm whether underlay is included in the product specification when comparing prices.
