LVT, SPC, and WPC: The Key Differences
Luxury vinyl tile, or LVT, is a multi-layer flooring product where a photographic print film gives the appearance of wood or stone, topped by a clear protective wear layer. Standard LVT uses a flexible vinyl core and is a comfortable, quiet floor covering. SPC, or stone plastic composite, uses a rigid core made from limestone powder and PVC that is dimensionally stable, waterproof, and suitable for installation over underfloor heating and in rooms with significant temperature variation. WPC, or wood plastic composite, uses a foamed wood-polymer core that provides more underfoot cushioning than SPC. SPC has largely taken over from WPC in most markets due to its greater dimensional stability and slightly harder feel that better replicates real flooring.
Wear Layer Thickness
The wear layer is the transparent top layer that protects the printed design from scratching and abrasion. This is the single most important quality specification to confirm when ordering PVC flooring. Wear layer thickness is measured in thousandths of an inch (mil) or in millimeters. For residential use, 6 mil (0.15mm) is the minimum. For commercial use, 12 mil (0.3mm) is standard and 20 mil (0.5mm) is used for high-traffic commercial applications. Do not accept a manufacturer’s word on wear layer thickness. Ask for a cross-section photo and if possible, have an independent test conducted on a sample before committing to a bulk order.
Certifications for Export Markets
Formaldehyde emission is a key certification concern for indoor flooring. FloorScore certification and compliance with CARB Phase 2 or equivalent VOC emission standards are important for North American and European markets. CE marking and EN standards apply in Europe. Confirm applicable certifications with the factory and request genuine test reports before placing an order.
